The Mon Repos Palace

The Mon Repos Palace belonged at one time to the Greek Royal Family; it is nestled in its magnificent gardens in the area just opposite the ruins of the Basilica of Paleopolis. The Mon Repos Palace can not be seen from the street, but you can see its pillared entrance gate. The entrance to the estate and gardens is free; you only need to buy a ticket if you want to visit the museum inside the Mon Repos Palace.

Mon Repos is a late Georgian building that has a pillared portico and was originally built in 1824 for Sir Frederick Adam who was the British High Commissioner in the early 19th century.  It was only meant for a summer retreat. Princess Sissy also stayed here for a while before she acquired the site of Achillion. It was here that Prince Philip, husband and consort of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom was born in 1921.

The Mon Repos Palace and the museum hosted in it are worth visiting as there you will find various interesting exhibits dating from the Roman times to the 19th century.

Rooms with furniture and paintings are arranged as they once were and on the upper floors you will find lots of exhibits found during the excavations at the area of Mon Repos and Palaiopolis. Here you will also find paintings from various artists that are unique to the island and Greece. Many beautiful and interesting plants and flowers can be found in the gardens of Mon Repos.

Because Mon Repos is built on the site of the ancient Greek town of Kerkyra, some of the best archaeological remains were discovered in its grounds. In the gardens of Mon Repos you will find remains of the 3 ancient temples dedicated to Hera, Apollo and Poseidon respectively. The Temple of Apollo is at the very back of the gardens near the seashore and it is often called Temple of Kardaki; named after the spring of Kardaki running just beneath. Myth says that any foreigners that take a drink from it are destined to forget his homeland and always return to Corfu.

The Mon Repos Palace is closed on Mondays and all other days it opens from 08:30-15:00 p.m. The entrance to the garden is free and you can stay there until 19:00 p.m. Telephone number of the Palace is: 26610 41369. The bus will leave and take you just in front of the Palace while there is also a taxi station just in front of the entrance.
