Kanoni & Mouse Island

The Kanoni peninsula is only 8 km away from Corfu town or a 30-minute walk along the coastline to the south.  It is here you will experience amazing views over the green landscape, the azure blue waters of the sea and the two famous islets complementing that world-wide famous scenery.

The view from Kannoni actually serves as Corfu's visual signature. If you've ever looked at photographs of Corfu, you've certainly seen a shot of the 2 neighboring islets at Kanoni peninsula.

Kanoni was named after the battery of artillery established by the French in 1798. One of the battery's cannons still stands at the tourist kiosk found on the site. Kanoni is cut off from the rest of the island on the west side by the swampy lagoon, Lake Halikiopoulou. This lagoon is separated from the sea by a causeway, which joins the southern tip of Kanoni to the area called Perama. This narrow bridge with the exceptional view can be used to take a beautiful walk or a bike ride.

The lake of Halkiopoulou continues to be an important hydro-biotope that shelters various migrating birds despite the tourist growth of the region and the expansion of the airport.

Here you will find those two tiny islands you often see on pictures:  one is the islet of Vlaherna and the other one is Pontikonisi or Mouse Island. The view from Kanoni over these two islands with Corfu in the background is the most famous in Corfu; you'll see copies of it everywhere on postcards and in magazines.

Vlaherna is the small flat island with a causeway out to it and it is completely occupied by a small 12th century monastery. It is a small church that comes complete with icons of the monastery's patron saint Our Lady of Vlaherna. From Vlaherna Island you can take a boat to Mouse Island found in the background.

The Mouse Island is a hilly, wooded island hosting a 13th century monastery. According to the legend Mouse Island itself was originally formed when the ship that had taken Odysseus back to Ithaca returning to its home port was turned to stone by Poseidon. Poseidon was angry at being defied by the Phaeceans. Others say that it got its name because of its shape.

Corfu airport is built on the lagoon and the main runway ends only about 100 metres away from the Vlaherna monastery itself. This makes it an ideal spot for aeroplane watching as the planes appear to graze the top of the monastery as they land and take off, making an amazing sight to behold. Standing on the causeway from Kanoni to Perama, you are directly in line with the flight path and could have your hat knocked off by the wheels of the planes!
